A recent study undertaken by software company AnchorFree, has found that an alarming 90% of travellers expose their data to cyber criminals.
Many travellers are apparently almost totally unaware of the danger of using unsecured public wi-fi networks, with nine out of 10 UK travellers exposing financial and personal information over these unsecured networks.
Despite 77% of respondents expressed an ‘awareness’ of the potential consequences of using unsecured overseas wi-fi networks, only 10% took any kind of protective measures.
The study also found that around 87% of global wi-fi hotspots are not secure.
So, how can you keep your data safe while travelling?
- Ensure that your computer has the most up to date anti virus protection software
- Don’t conduct any banking or sensitive transaction of free wi-fi hotspot networks
- Always use paid internet cafes to conduct your sensitive transactions
