It has been widely reported that the Thai Military and Police Force staged a coup on the evening of 22 May 2014.
The coup followed months of political tension in the country with the military and police seizing power from the caretaker government and suspending the constitution. A curfew has been imposed on residents and tourists between the hours of 10pm and 5am.
The Australian Government has urged Australians in Thailand to exercise a high degree of caution, follow orders given to them and avoid protests. The curfew will not be imposed for people travelling to and from the airports but it is essential that you hold your passport and airline tickets if travelling during the curfew times. DFAT has not recommended that Australians in Thailand return home or that those planning to travel should cancel their trip
If you are currently in Thailand or planning to travel there shortly, DFAT has issued the following advice;
Exercise a high degree of caution
