Women Travelling Solo

Over the past decade there has been a steady and quiet increase in the number of women heading overseas solo. In fact, there is now more woman departing Australia solo than their male counterparts, leaving behind the old fashioned thinking that women are not safe in a foreign lands alone.

So, why should you travel solo as a woman?

1. Gain self confidence

If you’ve seen Eat Pray Love you’ll understand. Boarding a big plane and heading off into the big wide world is no doubt a confronting experience initially but stick it out and you’ll be rewarded ten fold. Fumble through local language and currency and breakdown stereotypical views of women in lesser developed countries by holding your own. The independence and confidence you gain will be immeasurable. You’ll return home a changed woman and all of your friends and family will notice a certain glow that will last long after your tan has left you.

2. Do what you want, when you want

Travelling with family is great, incredible with a partner and amazing with friends. But, if you’re totally honest with yourself at one point or another on those trips it’s likely that you either a) had to do or go somewhere you weren’t interested in and/or b) missed out on something high on your must see list because your companion didn’t share your passion o you were constrained by the Sandman. Travelling solo means sticking to no ones but your own schedule. Want to spend 3 hours looking at the ceiling of Sistine Chapel, go for it! Fancy spending an afternoon with your own picnic under the Eiffel Tower drinking wine and eating Camembert, whose going to stop you?

3. Your friend will be jealous

We’ve all been guilty of ‘holiday envy’ at one time or another just as we all have that one friend who seems to have the most amazing life jet setting around the world and never complaining about their bills or laundry. Be that person!

4. It will heal you

Just been through a divorce, finished studying, been made redundant or lost someone close to you? Now is the time to rediscover who you are after such a monumental life change. Carve out who YOU are whilst walking through the markets of Delhi, eating your way through Rome or partying in Ibiza. It’s all about you!

There are several boutique travel agents now offer ladies only travel either in groups of like minded women or solo. If you’re thinking about it these agents are a great starting point to help you along.
