Important before you buy

You must be returning to Australia at the end of your trip
Your total time overseas must not exceed 18 months from your original departure date
A 48-hour waiting period applies when cover starts while you are already overseas
Known or existing events are generally not covered

Select “One Way” when getting a quote

If you are already overseas, choose “One Way” during the quote process and nominate Australia as your final destination. This helps ensure the quote is based on travellers who have already departed Australia and need cover for the remainder of their trip home.

Choose the travel region that matches where you will be travelling before returning to Australia. For example, if you are in Europe and will not be travelling to the USA, Canada or Antarctica before returning home, select the region that reflects that itinerary.

Already experiencing a problem?

Travel insurance is designed for unexpected events. If something has already happened before you buy your policy, or you are already experiencing symptoms, delays, disruption, loss, theft, injury, illness or another known issue, that matter would generally not be covered.

Already overseas? You may still have options

Leaving Australia without travel insurance does not always mean it is too late.

Go Insurance may be able to offer cover to eligible Australians who are already overseas, including travellers who forgot to buy cover before departure, extended their trip, or discovered their previous policy has ended.

The key is to arrange cover as soon as possible and understand when cover starts, what waiting periods apply, and what will not be covered because it was already known before the policy was issued.

Who it may suit

Australians who forgot to buy travel insurance before leaving
Travellers whose existing policy has expired while overseas
People who extended their trip and need additional cover
Travellers returning to Australia after time overseas

How to get a quote when you are already overseas

The quote process is simple, but the details matter.

1

Select “One Way”

When getting a quote, choose “One Way” because your trip has already started and you need cover for your journey back to Australia.

2

Nominate Australia as your final destination

Your trip and period of insurance must end in Australia on the same date, and you must have a ticket booked to return to Australia.

3

Choose the right travel region

Select the region that matches where you will travel before returning home. Your selected region should reflect your remaining itinerary.

How cover works after departure

Buying travel insurance while already overseas is different from buying before you leave Australia.

For cover arranged to start when you are already overseas, a 48-hour waiting period applies. Once that waiting period has passed, cover is provided in line with the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the PDS.

The policy is designed for selected unexpected events that occur after cover starts. It is not designed to cover events, symptoms, losses, delays, disruptions or circumstances that already existed or were known before the policy was purchased.

Examples of what may not be covered

!You are already sick, injured or experiencing symptoms before buying
!Your flight has already been delayed, cancelled or rescheduled before buying
!Your luggage, passport or belongings have already been lost, stolen or damaged
!You are already aware of a weather event, natural disaster, strike, unrest or other disruption affecting your trip

Eligibility at a glance

Already overseas cover is designed for Australians who are travelling temporarily and returning home to Australia.

You must have a permanent residential address in Australia
You must be returning to resume residence in Australia at the end of your trip
You must have unrestricted right of entry into Australia
You must have access to long-term medical care in Australia, excluding reciprocal health agreements
You must have a ticket booked for travel to Australia at the end of your trip

When this product may not suit

This cover is generally not designed for Australians living overseas who want cover for a side trip that starts and ends overseas.

For example, if you are living in the UK and want cover for a short trip to Croatia before returning to the UK, this type of one-way policy would generally not be suitable.

If your trip does not start in Australia, it must end in Australia to be eligible to purchase a one-way policy with Go Insurance.

Extending a trip or replacing expired cover

Plans change. Trips get extended. Sometimes existing travel insurance runs out while you are still away.

If your current Go Insurance policy is still active, you may be able to request one extension of the policy period, depending on your circumstances and the reason you cannot return to Australia as planned.

You must contact us before your policy end date. You may be asked to provide evidence of your pre-booked travel arrangements.

Before you buy or extend

Check your current policy end date if you have existing cover
Confirm your remaining destinations and travel dates
Check your booked return travel to Australia
Declare any relevant pre-existing medical conditions
Read the PDS before you buy

What cover may include

Depending on the policy you choose, travel insurance may include selected benefits for future unexpected events after cover starts.

Overseas medical expenses and emergency assistance
Cancellation and curtailment benefits in selected circumstances
Personal property and delayed luggage benefits
Delayed travel and missed connection benefits
Optional covers where available, selected and shown on your Certificate of Insurance

Emergency assistance

If you already hold a Go Insurance policy and you are experiencing a serious medical or travel emergency, contact Emergency Assistance as soon as possible.

If you do not yet hold a policy, emergency assistance is not a substitute for buying cover and cannot create cover for an event that has already happened.
