Card Cover Guide

Does your credit card include travel insurance?

Search your exact card name to see whether it is listed for complimentary travel insurance, what you need to have done before cover applies, and where to confirm it. This page summarises the banks’ published terms; your bank or its insurer can confirm what applies to you.

Important: check with your bank before relying on anything here

This page summarises the card issuers’ published terms as at 4 August 2026. Banks change, withdraw or restructure card insurance without notice to us, and several changes are already scheduled for 1 October 2026. Your bank or its insurer is the only party that can confirm whether cover applies to your exact card and whether you have met the eligibility and activation requirements. Nothing on this page is advice or a recommendation.

START HERE: Which bank issued your card, and what is the exact card name? The bank name alone is not enough. Cover differs between cards from the same bank, and the product name is on your statement or in your banking app.

Cards that have lost cover are searchable too, so you always get an answer. Two cards have “Travel” in the name with less cover than the name suggests.

What changes when

Change timeline

The applicable policy depends on the exact card, the effective date and, in some cases, the date of the claimable event. Dates already in effect are teal; upcoming changes are orange.

Why are banks changing card travel insurance in 2026?

From 1 October 2026 the Reserve Bank is cutting the cap on interchange fees on domestic consumer credit cards from 0.80% to 0.30%, removing an estimated $660 million a year of issuer revenue. Interchange helps fund card benefits, insurance included, so further issuer notices are expected through 2026 and 2027. Not every issuer will change and not every change is a reduction: Westpac, for example, is raising its personal liability limit and lowering its domestic excess while reducing other benefits. What any individual issuer will do is a matter for that issuer.

Four steps

How to check your card cover

The four questions that decide whether card cover applies to you

1. Does your exact card currently include travel insurance? A bank name is not enough. Cards from the same issuer differ, some products are off sale, and some cards have lost cover while others from the same bank keep it. Find the exact product name on your statement or in your banking app, then search it above.

2. What published eligibility or activation requirements apply? Holding an eligible card may not be sufficient. The requirements may include a minimum prepaid travel spend, payment of a specific type of expense, a return overseas ticket, formal activation, or simply an open and activated account.

3. What does the current policy say? The applicable policy depends on the exact card, the effective date and, in some cases, the date of the claimable event. Only the issuer or insurer can confirm how the terms apply to you.

4. What are the published limits on who and what is covered? Age limits, pre-existing medical conditions and maximum trip lengths differ widely between banks, even where the same insurer sits behind the cover. Check the detail for your bank above, then confirm with the bank or insurer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does my credit card automatically include travel insurance?

Only some cards include it, and the exact card matters. Cover differs between cards from the same bank, some cards lost cover during 2026 while others from the same bank kept it, and two cards have “Travel” in the name with less cover than the name suggests. Search your exact card name at the top of this page, then confirm with your bank.

What do I need to do before the cover applies?

Holding an eligible card may not be enough. Common published requirements include a minimum prepaid travel spend on the card, often $500, or $250 at ANZ, plus a return ticket, being under the card’s age limit, and at some banks formally activating the cover. Bankwest is the exception, with no spend requirement: you just need an activated, non-cancelled card at the time of loss. Check your card’s policy booklet for the exact conditions.

How do I find my exact card name?

The product name is printed on your statement and shown in your banking app. If you are not sure, your bank can confirm which product you hold. This matters because two cards from the same bank can have completely different insurance positions.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

Published positions vary widely. ING and Bendigo publish no cover and no assessment pathway for pre-existing conditions. NAB, MyCard and ANZ publish no automatic cover: nothing is payable unless Allianz Global Assistance confirms cover in writing, with a $75 assessment fee if cover is confirmed. Bankwest publishes an automatic list of covered conditions for eligible cardholders, with a health assessment and premium otherwise. Westpac’s position changes on 1 October 2026. Check your card’s policy wording for what applies to you.

What is changing on 1 October 2026?

Westpac makes the largest single change: base complimentary international cover reduces to four benefits, activation in the app becomes a condition, the eligible card list reduces to seven, and benefits such as cancellation move to a purchased comprehensive upgrade. MyCard restructures its card levels the same day. More broadly, the Reserve Bank is reducing the cap on the interchange fees that fund card benefits, and several issuers have announced changes to fees, rewards and in some cases insurance as a result. The timeline above lists each published change and its date.

How long can my trip be under card cover?

Published maximums range from 31 days on Bankwest Platinum cards and 40 consecutive days at ING up to 6 months on some cards, and several cards cannot be extended by the cardholder. Westpac’s maximums also change on 1 October 2026. Search your card above for its current published limit.

Who actually insures the cover, my bank?

The bank arranges the cover, but a separate insurer stands behind it: Allianz for Westpac, NAB, MyCard, ANZ, ING and Bendigo; Zurich with Cover-More for CommBank and Bankwest; and Chubb for American Express. The issuer and its insurer determine eligibility and claims.

Where do I check whether my card qualifies?

Each verified bank publishes a check point: checkyourcover.com.au for Westpac, MyCard and ANZ cards, the Allianz Global Assistance eligibility portal for NAB, NetBank or the app for CommBank, and the banks’ own published terms for ING, Bankwest and Bendigo. Search your card above and the result shows where to check.
